Faulty posture or movement patterns may be a contributing factor in chronic pain or injury. Common postural dysfunctions in the upper back include a slouched posture with upper back being rounded shoulders dropped forward and chin poking.
In the lower back a common dysfunction is of an increased curvature in the lumbar spine. These poor postures lead to muscle strain, stress on joints and fatigue and pain. A postural assessment will identify joint flexibility as well as muscle imbalances.
A comprehensive exercise program is important to retrain the body’s postural muscles to hold the body in proper alignment. Postural re-education involves improving the joint flexibility, stretching short or tight muscles and strengthening overstretched weak muscles. Mobilizing joints and stretching tight muscles allows for proper positioning but it is vital to strengthen the postural supporting muscles to allow the body to hold itself in proper neutral alignment and alleviate strain.
